Recreating the Mondrian Cake

My friend and I wanted to recreate Caitlin Freeman's Mondrian cake from Modern Art Desserts. They sell it at the SFMOMA and it combines two of my three favorite things- art and dessert! (Sadly, I couldn't get running into this project) The whole project says it takes about eight hours, spread over about three days. We did it in one day. Eight hours of baking is insane but it was way worth it. We modified the recipe because we didn't have the pullman loaf pan and we would never eat that much cake before it went bad. So we used loaf pans and halved the recipe. I'm pretty proud of our results, especially for a first try!
Wishing I haf one of those industrial mixers. Even halving the recipe, all of the batter just barely fit in my stand mixer!
Since we had different pans, we needed to do math- diagrams and math up the wazoo!

Some of the loaves cooling before being measured and cut.
Measuring the cake!

Measuring and cutting to make right angle cuts- definitely the hardest part!
The pieces all cut
Making chocolate ganache

Pouring ganache over the pieces

Setting everything up beforehand was so important because the cake is fragile.
Posing with the our baby pre final ganache.

The final project! BOOM!
This project was pretty insane, but so rewarding! I love modern art and I love cake. If you also fall into this category, I say go for it!!
